Alibaba, the Hangzhou-headquartered e-commerce titan, announced its entry into the wearable technology sector with the launch of Quark AI Glasses, slated for release in China by the end of 2025. These smart glasses, powered by Alibaba’s advanced Qwen large language model and its upgraded AI assistant Quark, mark the company’s first foray into this innovative product category.

Alibaba, a dominant force in China’s AI landscape, continues to develop cutting-edge models that rival Western counterparts like OpenAI, positioning itself as a leader in the region’s tech evolution.

The Quark AI Glasses will directly compete with the Ray-Ban smart glasses produced by Meta and the new AI glasses by Xiaomi. Alibaba hopes to expand the number of people who can access the assistant using wearable devices by using the Quark AI, which has been used as a mobile application in China.

The glasses also have their fair share of features, which include hands-free calling, music playback, real-time language translation, and transcribing meetings with a camera integrated in them. These functions follow the still-developing pattern of wearables being the newest budding form of computing, supplementing smartphones with a smooth, hands-free performance.

Alibaba’s vast ecosystem, encompassing mapping services, online travel platforms, and Ant Group’s widely used Alipay mobile payment service, adds significant value to the glasses. Users will be able to navigate using Alibaba’s mapping tools, make payments via Alipay, and compare prices on Taobao, Alibaba’s leading e-commerce platform.

While the company has yet to disclose pricing or detailed technical specifications, the Quark AI Glasses are poised to redefine wearable technology in China’s competitive market.
